A Week Full of Good Things, DSM

Good morning, neighbors! ☀️

Can you feel it? School's basically sprinting to the finish line — and Des Moines is already lacing up its summer shoes right alongside it. We are this close, and the city is not waiting for the calendar to catch up.

And the weather? It's actually showing up for us this weekend. Saturday climbs to around 87° with mostly cloudy skies — warm, a little dramatic, and perfect for being out in it. Sunday settles into a beautiful 85° mix of sun and clouds, which is honestly ideal weather to be cheering strangers across a finish line downtown. Fair warning though: Friday has a 70% chance of storms rolling through, so if you've got outdoor plans, morning is your friend.

This weekend has the kind of lineup that makes you want to close the laptop and just go. The Greek Food Fair is back at St. George Greek Orthodox Church — two and a half days of authentic food, music, and community warmth that Des Moines regulars know not to miss. Over at Water Works Park on Saturday, the Iowa Craft Brew Festival brings 70+ Iowa breweries together for an afternoon that is equal parts celebration and summer kickoff. And on Sunday morning, thousands of athletes take on IRONMAN 70.3 — swimming Gray's Lake, biking across the metro, and running through downtown. You don't have to race a single mile to feel the energy of that finish line.

Summer isn't officially here yet — but this weekend, it absolutely feels like it.

Let's get into it.

Now this week's very important question:

A quick message from Camp Homework

🎈 Weekend Plans That Feel More Like Little Memories Than "Plans"

The funny thing about family memories is that they're rarely the big expensive outings.

Most of the time, they're the random little traditions nobody planned. ❤️

🍓 Farmers Market Breakfast Challenge — Everyone gets $5 and picks one thing they've never tried before. The rule? Everyone has to take at least one bite of everyone else's choice.

📸 Family Photo Safari — Head to a local park and give each family member a mission:
• Find something red
• Find something tiny
• Find something that makes you laugh
• Find something beautiful

Compare photos at the end.

🏃 Playground Hop Adventure — Instead of spending two hours at one park, visit three different playgrounds for 30 minutes each. New slides somehow feel like a whole new vacation to kids.

🍕 Build-Your-Own Picnic Dinner — Grab takeout from different local spots. Maybe pizza from one place, drinks from another, dessert from somewhere else. Turn dinner into a mini food tour.

🌅 Sunset Bench Challenge — Find a bench you've never sat on before. Stay for 15 minutes. No phones. Just watch the world go by together.

Tiny adventure rule: Do ONE thing you'd normally say "maybe next time" to. That's usually the memory everyone keeps. ❤️
