Hope you squeezed every last drop out of that Labor Day weekend — the weather cooperated beautifully, with plenty of sunshine and warm temps perfect for one last trip to the pool, a Principal Park game, or just sitting on the porch pretending summer isn't ending. This week feels like the real, no-arguing-about-it start of fall in Des Moines. Kids are back in the swing of the school routine, Iowa State and Iowa are set for their annual Cy-Hawk showdown Saturday night, and the farmers markets are hitting that sweet late-summer stretch where the sweet corn, tomatoes, and apples all show up at the same table.

Local galleries and studios throw open their doors for one evening of art, music, and street food. This is the perfect companion outing to our new East Village guide — walk the same blocks you just read about, but with a glass of wine in hand and local artists there to chat. Go early if you want to actually talk to the artists before it gets crowded around 7. Parking fills up fast in the district itself, so consider parking near Court Avenue and walking over. Bring cash — several vendor booths don't take cards.
