🎨 The Ultimate Guide to Des Moines Arts, Museums & Culture

Whether you're planning a family outing, a relaxed weekend date, or an afternoon on your own, these spots are worth adding to your list.

🖼️ Des Moines Art Center: Explore an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, rotating exhibitions, and distinctive architecture. Best of all, general admission is free.

🏛️ State Historical Museum of Iowa: Discover the stories, people, and events that shaped Iowa through exhibits covering the state's history and heritage. It's a worthwhile stop for curious adults and families alike.

🌿 Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden: Step into a beautiful indoor garden filled with tropical plants, seasonal displays, and peaceful spaces to explore. It's a lovely option when you want a change of scenery.

📚 Des Moines Public Library: Beyond books, local libraries offer community programs, events, and opportunities to discover something new. Check the calendar for activities that fit your interests.

Weekend idea: Start with a walk through Pappajohn Sculpture Park, explore the galleries at the Des Moines Art Center, and finish your day with a visit to another local cultural attraction.

🎈 Weekend Plans That Cost Almost Nothing But End Up Being The Most Fun

Ask a kid about their favorite memory and you’ll rarely hear about something expensive. It’s usually the night the power went out, or the afternoon they jumped in a leaf pile until dinner. Here are a few ideas to help you make some of those.

☔ The Puddle Patrol. Thursday’s showers are an invitation. Boots on, flashlight in hand, and the whole family goes on an official puddle inspection around the block. Score each puddle for splash quality. Hot chocolate is the reward.

🍂 The Great Leaf Pile Olympics. With Saturday’s sunshine, rake one giant pile and hold events: longest jump, best dramatic fall, and most creative leaf-pile entrance. Bring a “judge” with a clipboard (a napkin works).

🎃 Porch Pumpkin Awards. Pick up a few pumpkins and give each family member a category: Silliest, Spookiest, Most Likely to Scare Grandma. Vote at dinner. Winners get bragging rights and first pick of the seeds to roast.

🚗 Fall Color Cruise with a Theme Song. Hop in the car with no destination. Each person picks one song, and you drive until the playlist runs out. Count the reddest tree you spot. Heated seats are optional but encouraged.

🌙 Sunday Night Moon Check. A first-quarter moon is on the calendar for Sunday. Grab blankets, step into the yard, and see who can spot the most craters. Kids love being the “official astronomer.”

🍎 The Kitchen Table Taste Test. Buy three kinds of apples, slice them up, and blind-taste them. Rank them. Argue passionately. Declare a family champion.

✨ If you can’t remember what the plan was but everyone remembers laughing, that’s a win. ❤️

🌿 Family Connection Corner | Sponsored by Camp Homework

Dinner's one of the few times the whole family lands in the same room — here's a question to open things up each night this week.

Day

Question

Thursday

If you could add one new tradition to our family’s fall, what would it be?

Friday

What’s the best smell you can think of, and where does it take you?

Saturday

If we built a haunted house made of only cozy things, what would be inside?

Sunday

What’s something you’re proud of that nobody noticed?

Monday

If you got to be the teacher for one hour, what would you teach?

Tuesday

What’s one small thing that made today better than yesterday?

Wednesday

If you could ask anyone from history one question over dinner, who and what?

These questions are a great way to kick off dinner. And if you've got a student in the house, they're a good reminder that learning doesn't stop when school does. Camp Homework supports K–12 students all year long, whether they need a little extra help keeping up or just want to stay sharp and ahead of the curve. Worth a look at camphomework.com.

🎟️ EVENT SHOWCASE

When: Oct 15–18 and Oct 22–25 (check the zoo’s site for evening hours)
Where: Blank Park Zoo, 7401 SW 9th St, Des Moines
Tickets: Advance tickets recommended. Details at blankparkzoo.com

Night Eyes is the zoo’s “merry, not scary” Halloween tradition, and it’s been a Central Iowa family favorite for years. It’s built for kids of all ages, with lights, costumes, and fall fun in place of jump scares.

It’s the perfect pick if your little ones love Halloween but not the spooky stuff. Costumes are encouraged, so this is a great dress rehearsal for October 31st.

Opening night is tonight, but with showers in the forecast, you may want to wait for the sunnier weekend or the following one.
