A Week Full of Good Things, DSM

👋 Good morning, neighbors!

It's shaping up to be a gorgeous stretch here in Des Moines — sunny, warm, and about as close to perfect August weather as we get. We're in the final days of the Iowa State Fair, the Downtown Farmers' Market is back in full swing, and there's just enough of a hint of "back to school" in the air to make everyone a little nostalgic for lazy summer mornings.

Inside this edition: your 4-day forecast, a very important poll question, some almost-free weekend ideas, dinner table conversation starters, and everything happening around town for the next two weeks.

Let's get into it.

Hottest of the stretch — stay hydrated

Storms could roll through market and Fair hours

Clears up nicely by afternoon

The one-liner: Saturday's the wild card — a 40% storm chance lines up right with peak Farmers' Market hours and the Fair's last full day, so if you've got flexibility, Thursday or Friday are your best bets for guaranteed sunshine. Otherwise, bring a poncho; neither event stops for rain. ⛈️🎡

Now this week's very important question:

🥕 DOWNTOWN FARMERS' MARKET SPECIAL SECTION

The market is deep into its 51st season — 12 blocks of the Historic Court District, 300+ vendors, every Saturday through October 31. Here's what to know before you go this weekend.

🎟️ Getting In

  • No tickets, no admission — it's free and open to everyone

  • Bell rings at 7 a.m. sharp at 3rd and Court, wraps up at noon

  • Rain or shine — only genuinely dangerous weather shuts it down

🅿️ Parking & Getting There

  • Free lots: Court Avenue Bridge, Grand Avenue Bridge, and the Iowa Cubs stadium lot at 1 Line Drive

  • Paid garages: Municipal 3rd & Court (237 Court Ave.) and the Science Center garage (401 W. MLK Jr. Pkwy.)

  • On a bike? There's a free, staffed bike valet at 2nd and Court

🧺 What's in the Bags
Fresh produce, meat, cheese, eggs, baked goods, plants, and ready-to-eat meals from vendors across 74 Iowa cities. Sweet corn, honey, small-batch hot sauces, and fresh cheeses have all made recent appearances — the lineup rotates week to week, so no two Saturdays look quite the same.

🐾 Good to Know

  • Bring your own bag — not every vendor has one to spare

  • The market takes SNAP/EBT, Double Up Food Bucks, and most FMNP/WIC vouchers

  • Dogs are welcome on a short leash, but the crowds and food smells can be a lot for them

  • Forgot a bag or need a wagon? The Resource Tent at 3rd and Court has you covered, first come first served

Early bird or late riser? Show up at 7 for the best produce and thinnest crowds. Show up at 10 for the full scene — just budget extra time to move through the sidewalks.

🌿 Family Connection Corner | Sponsored by Camp Homework

Dinner table conversations are one of the easiest ways to reconnect after a busy day — here's a question for every night this week.

Day

Question

Thursday

If you could turn any chore into a game, which one — and what would the rules be?

Friday

What's a food you used to hate but actually like now?

Saturday

If you found $20 on the sidewalk, what's the first thing you'd do with it?

Sunday

What's one thing you want to make sure we do before summer's officially over?

Monday

If you had to describe today in one word, what would it be and why?

Tuesday

What's something a friend does that always makes you feel better?

Wednesday

If you could ask any grown-up in our family one question, what would it be?

🎟️ EVENT SHOWCASE

🎡 IOWA STATE FAIR — THE FINAL WEEKEND

Now through Sunday, August 23 | Iowa State Fairgrounds, 3000 E Grand Ave | Admission required

If you haven't made it to the Fair yet this year, this is it — the last few days before the gates close for another season. Over a million people come through every year, and it's easy to see why: the butter cow, the food on a stick, the livestock barns, and the Grandstand concerts all in one sprawling 445-acre stretch of pure Iowa tradition.

Bring the whole family and plan to spend a few hours wandering. Between the animal exhibits, the vendors, and the people-watching alone, there's genuinely something for every age and every attention span.

🥕 DOWNTOWN FARMERS' MARKET

Saturday, August 23 | 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | Court Avenue District | Free

One of Des Moines' great Saturday traditions is in full swing, with over 300 vendors spread across more than a dozen downtown blocks. From fresh produce and baked goods to handmade crafts and live music, it's the kind of morning that turns into "let's just stay a little longer."

The bell rings at 7 a.m. sharp to kick things off. Get there early for the best pick of produce, or come a little later for a more relaxed stroll — either way, bring cash, bring a tote bag, and bring an appetite.
