A Week Full of Good Things, DSM

👋 Hey, Des Moines. ☀️

Alex here, and I'm just going to say it: this is the weekend, Des Moines. Hinterland rolls into St. Charles with one of its best lineups in years, 100+ hot air balloons lift off in Indianola to kick off the National Balloon Classic's 50th anniversary, pro skaters take over Lauridsen Skatepark downtown, and the Iowa Cubs send off their homestand with Friday night fireworks. There's a little something loud, a little something beautiful, and a little something for everyone. Pace yourself, hydrate, and let's get into it.

The one-liner: A stormy start clears out fast — by Sunday it's easily the nicest day of the bunch, so save your outdoor plans for the back half of the weekend if you can. 🌦️➡️☀️

Now this week's very important question:

🎒 Back to School Series (Part 2 of 4)

Your Kid's Body Clock Won't Fix Itself Overnight — Here's the Countdown That Actually Works

Quick gut check: What time is your kid falling asleep tonight, versus what they'll need once the alarm resets for school? For most families, that gap is bigger than they think — and it's been quietly growing since June, one later bedtime at a time.

Here's the part that trips almost everyone up: a body clock takes roughly two weeks to fully reset. Not two nights. Not "one rough Sunday and we'll power through." Two weeks. Which means the families scrambling to fix sleep the weekend before school starts are already too late, and August 1st is closer than it feels.

The fix is simple, but it only works if it starts now:

  • Move bedtime earlier by 15 minutes every 2–3 nights.

  • Move wake-up time earlier too.

  • Get bright light in the morning.

  • Keep lights dim at night.

That combination resets the body clock faster than an earlier bedtime alone. Get this right, and mornings stop being a fight over socks.

Rested kids focus better — and so do kids with the right academic support. Camp Homework's tutors help build the habits that make school year mornings (and evenings) easier.
